about me

I’m an editor and writer living in Brooklyn who grew up in the coal country of Southwest Virginia. Before becoming an editor, I earned my PhD in American Studies at Yale. I've taught there and at several other universities, including Princeton and Columbia. I've written and published several academic articles, as well as Black Market, an interdisciplinary book that reveals how slavery’s market logic is embedded in the very fabric of the United States, not only structuring its racial hierarchies but also driving its economic rise and its cultural production, long after formal abolition in 1865. As an editor, I've worked with dozens of scholars in cultural studies, political science, media studies, and ethnic studies on all kinds of projects--from book manuscripts to digital monographs to book proposals. I also assisted with research and copyediting on Heather McGhee's The Sum of Us, a National Book Award Finalist and a New York Times bestseller. I have a knack for close reading and shaping arguments, and I love helping authors make headway on their journey. If you have a project in the works and you need some insight and guidance, get in touch through my contact page for a free consultation and let’s talk about it.
